National Marine Sanctuary System of the United States

The National Marine Sanctuary System is a constellation of protected underwater parks administered by the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries (ONMS), which is a sub-division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), expanding across more than 620,000 square miles of marine and Great Lakes waters. Spanning from Washington State to the Florida Keys and from Lake Huron to American Samoa, this network includes 16 national marine sanctuaries along with the Papahānaumokuākea and Rose Atoll Marine National Monuments. Moreover, five more sanctuaries have been proposed in recent times.

Channel Islands National Park National Marine Sanctuary

The Channel Islands, often called the “Galapagos of North America,” was established in 1980 and spans 1,470 square miles of ocean around five islands off the coast of Southern California. This protected area lies at the confluence of two major ocean currents, fostering incredible biodiversity, from kelp forests and deep-sea coral habitats to endangered species and historic shipwrecks. The sanctuary’s remote location preserves the unique ecosystems and rich cultural history of the Chumash people, who have lived in the area for thousands of years. It also supports various commercial and recreational activities like fishing and tourism while prioritizing conservation and sustainable use. Programs like “Los Marineros” and “Students at Sea” engage the public in marine education, reinforcing the sanctuary’s commitment to research, outreach, and the protection of natural and cultural resources.

Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary

Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary, established in 1981, originally covered 1,279 square miles but expanded in 2015 to over 3,200 square miles. Located along the California coast, this sanctuary is part of the productive California Current ecosystem. It supports a vibrant array of marine life, from endangered species like gray, blue, elephant seals, harbor seals, Stellar sea lions, Pacific white-sided dolphins, and humpback whales to thriving populations of white sharks. The sanctuary’s ecosystem is driven by nutrient-rich waters brought to the surface by upwelling currents, making it one of the most biologically abundant regions worldwide.

Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary

Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary lies entirely offshore, covering 1,286 square miles of ocean, and was established in 1989. Located on the coast of California, It protects diverse habitats, including rocky banks, deep-sea canyons, and soft seafloor ecosystems. This area serves as a vital feeding ground for seabirds, fish, and marine mammals. The remote location makes it an ideal site for scientific research, with sanctuary scientists working closely with universities and other partners to study this biodiverse region.

Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary

Often dubbed the “Serengeti of the Sea,” Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary is a breathtaking stretch of over 6,000 sq miles along California’s central coast. As a matter of fact, it is one of the largest sanctuary systems in the U.S., and it was founded in 1992. Encompassing tide pools, kelp forests, and underwater canyons, it is home to an incredible variety of marine life, from shrimp to majestic blue whales. The sanctuary also emphasizes environmental protection and public engagement, inviting visitors to explore its rich ecosystems and participate in preserving this national marine treasure.

Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary

Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary showcases one of North America’s richest marine environments and untouched coastlines. Spanning 3,189 square miles off the Olympic Peninsula’s rugged coast, this sanctuary safeguards diverse ecosystems, from kelp forests and intertidal zones to deep-sea coral communities. Established in 1994, it also honors the cultural heritage of the region’s Indigenous communities—the Hoh, Makah, Quileute, and Quinault—who have deep, lasting ties to the ocean. The sanctuary’s mission focuses on protecting these natural and cultural treasures, preserving ecological integrity, and fostering public understanding through education.

Prayer For The Sea

All heads are bowed as we pray for the sea.

We beg the heavens for all darkness to flee

Its boundless grace, its depth, its might,

For protection and grace, we seek the light.

The waves that carry hopes and fears,

The tides that wash away the tears.

Breeze Relief

Beneath the stars, the ocean is still,

No stirring waves, or a windy ordeal

The air hangs heavy, thick and hot,

A stifling breath, a sailors’ knot.
